HOME BARRIER EVALUATION/REMOVAL

PROGRAM ADMINISTRATION:

Connecticut Bureau of Rehabilitation Services (BRS), through five Centers for Independent Living.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION: Home Barrier Evaluation/Removal programs offer financial assistance, in the form of low-interest loans, to people with disabilities who require modifications in their home or apartment to eliminate barriers to accessibility. Modifications may include installing ramps, elevators, stair glides or lifts, widening doorways, installing grab bars in showers and bathrooms, lowering kitchen and other cabinets, or making other modifications in their homes or apartments to make them accessible. Peer counselors will also help consumers to assess the accessibility of their homes or apartments, and assist them in finding the supplies and services needed to make the modifications.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE: Individuals with a disability, and parents, guardians, family members, or legal representatives of a person with a disability. The individual must be a resident of Connecticut for at least a year and have a disability that permanently affects major life activity.

COST: Loans are repaid at varying rates and according to income
