ADOPTIVE
PARENT/CHILD SEARCH
An adoptive parent/child
search is a
search for the birth parent of a person who was
relinquished for adoption as a child or a search
by a birth parent for the child he or she placed
for adoption.
- There are many private and
public resources that assist individuals with
adoptive parent or child searches.
- In Connecticut, identifying
information is provided through an adoption
registry. Every adoption agency is
required by state law to maintain an adoption
registry.
- Adopted adults age 18 or older can receive identifying
information on their birth parents if the
birth parents have filed their consent with
the registry. If consent is not on file, the
birth parents will be contacted for consent.
- Birth parents and birth
siblings can receive identifying information
regarding the adopted adult if consent is on
file. If consent is not on file, a search will
be conducted for the adopted adult age 18 or
older to obtain consent to release information
to the birth parents.
