RENT INCREASES - CONNECTICUT

WHEN MAY A LANDLORD INCREASE YOUR RENT?                     

A landlord has the right to raise your rent. However, the rent cannot be increased during the term of a written lease unless both you and your landlord have specifically agreed to permit him/her to do that. Without a written lease you would have an oral lease, and since this kind of lease is considered a month-to-month lease, your landlord has the right to increase your rent every month. Also, a landlord is not required to give a particular amount of notice to the tenant of a proposed rental increase (for example, a thirty day notice) unless such prior notice was previously agreed upon. FAIR RENT COMMISSIONS
If you believe your rent increase is unreasonable, and your town has a Fair Rent Commission, you can make a complaint to the commission. For more information see the e-Library paper “Fair Rent Commissions: Connecticut”.
