WHAT IS PROBATE COURT?
Probate courts in Connecticut are a separate division of the state judicial system.
- There are 130 Probate Courts in Connecticut.
- Probate judges in Connecticut are elected every four years.
- Probate Courts have jurisdiction over a wide variety of civil matters including:
- trusts and estates
- guardians and conservators
- civil commitment
- paternity issues
- parental rights
- adoptions
Probate Courts can also
- grant name changes
- approve or disapprove the marriage of a youth under the age of sixteen years
- waive the blood tests required for the issuance of marriage licenses
- some probate courts assist with obtaining a passport.
