ONLINE SUPPORT GROUPS

  • Online support groups provide an alternative method of support for people in distress by linking people with similar issues.
  • They have the potential to improve the access and delivery of support to a wide range of people, including some who may not seek or who may be unable to seek face-to-face support.
  • They reduce the sense of isolation caused by geographic or physical/mental constraints and increase feelings of validation.

HOW TO FIND AN ONLINE SUPPORT GROUP:

  • Ask a health care provider for assistance
  • Ask a genetic counselor (found at genetic clinics in hospitals)
  • Contact a reference librarian at your local library
  • Contact state or national organizations devoted to your disease or condition
  • Ask others you know with the same illness or life situation
  • Search the Internet
