DISABILITY PARKING PERMIT

The Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) (www.ct.gov/dmv) issues special parking permits to any eligible blind or disabled person who has registered a motorcycle, passenger or combination vehicle in their name. A special set of plates is issued bearing the international symbol of access.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A DISABILITY PARKING PERMIT

Disability parking permits must be applied for in the name of the disabled person or by the parent or guardian of the disabled person. The permit is for the exclusive use of the disabled person and may be used in any vehicle in which the disabled person is riding. The applicant must submit a properly completed application (DMV form – B-225), containing certification of blindness or serious and permanent impairment of the ability to walk. Forms can be obtained at any Department of Motor Vehicles office, filled out electronically (www.ct.gov/dmv/lib/dmv/B-225.pdf), or may be mailed by request by contacting the DMV Phone Center at (860) 263-5700 (Hartford area or outside of Connecticut) or at (800) 842-8222 (Toll free within Connecticut only). All DMV full service branches and satellite offices can issue disability parking permits. One additional permit or a replacement permit can be obtained at no charge.

NOTE: Effective January 1,2010, the DMV will no longer be issuing permanent lifetime disability parking permits. Permits are now valid for periods of two, four or six years and expire at the same time as the disabled person's driver's license or identification card. Permits need to be renewed at the end of the expiration month. A Connecticut driver's license or ID card must be obtained before applying for a disability parking permit.

HOW TO APPLY FOR A TEMPORARY PERMIT

Temporary disability parking permits are provided for people whose ability to walk is seriously, but temporarily, impaired. The permits are issued to anyone whose hospital discharge plan requires the use of crutches, wheel chairs, or other devices intended as an aid or substitution for walking. An application must be filled out (DMV form - B-225) for a permit to be issued. Permits are valid for a period of six months.
