WHAT IS A FOOD CO-OP?

A food co-op is an organization that seeks to obtain food at a low cost for its members. Sometimes the cost involves volunteer service to the co-op or for the larger community.

FOOD CO-OPS IN CONNECTICUT

There are two large food co-ops in Connecticut, Serve New England, http://www.servenewengland.org, and Angel Food Ministries, http://www.angelfoodministries.com.

SERVE NEW ENGLAND

  • Serve New England is based in Canton, Massachusetts and has food distribution sites in the six New England states.
  • Serve is a membership organization that promotes volunteer service.
  • With Serve's food distribution program, participants may receive a family food package of meats, fresh fruits, vegetables, and other grocery items in exchange for about $25 and 2 hours of volunteer service of the participant's choice. That is a discount of 30-40% off of supermarket prices. Other types of food packages, such as a meat package and a produce package, are available for similar savings.
  • Participants can receive as many food packages as desired for the designated price and 2 volunteer hours of service.
  • Serve accepts SNAP/food stamps.

ANGEL FOOD MINISTRIES

  • Angel Food Ministries is a faith-based, non-denominational organization providing food relief and financial support throughout the United States.
  • Angel Food's food distribution program provides a quantity of food that can fit into a medium-sized box at $30 per unit. The retail value of the food is estimated to be from $40-$65. Other specialty boxes, such as meat packages or produce packages may also be purchased.
  • There is no limit to the number of units or bonus foods an individual can receive.
  • Angel Food accepts SNAP/food stamps.
